Mercer gazed at Calla’s retreating figure with a glint of admiration in his eyes. She had evoked a different feeling within him from the moment she appeared in his life.
She was tough on the outside but soft within. Straightforward and resilient, she faced setbacks with determination. She possessed qualities unlike any of the girls he’d known before.
Sophie knew Mercer too well. She could see from his eyes that he admired Calla and had feelings for her. A spark of jealousy immediately rose in her heart.
“Mercer, someone needs to take care of your daily needs from now on. Why don’t I move in to look after you?” Sophie turned and sat down
beside Mercer.
Mercer didn’t even spare her a glance. He merely replied, “If you think that apartment is too small, I can rent you a bigger one.”
“Mercer, that’s not what I meant.” Sophie hurried to explain.
“I’m used to living alone,” Mercer replied coldly.

Hearing this, Sophie lowered her head in thought. Then, she said, ‘ Mercer, I don’t have any other intentions. I know my health isn’t the best right now. I only want to see you every day. Your happiness is my happiness.”
“Is that so?” Mercer looked up, staring into Sophie’s eyes with a cold
gaze.
“Don’t you believe me?” Sophie reached out and grabbed his hand.
Irritated by her touch, Mercer immediately withdrew his hand and stood up. He then walked to the window.

“I want to be alone for a while. You should go now,” he said with his back to her.
Sophie seemed a little hurt. She rose from the couch and started to leave. But after a few steps, she turned back, unable to give up.

Seeing his coldness, Sophie pleaded, “Mercer, I don’t need any status or anything. I only want to stay by your side…”
“Do your actions show that you don’t want anything? You want everything, Sophie. You’ve disappointed me deeply.” With that, Mercer turned to leave.

“Mercer…” Seeing him about to leave, Sophie panicked and collapsed onto the carpet.
Mercer turned back to see Sophie on the carpet, having an asthma attack. He immediately bent down to lift her, urgently asking, “Where’s your inhaler? Where is it?”

Mercer quickly took the inhaler from her bag and placed the mask above her nose. Her condition gradually improved. At this moment, Jasmine heard the commotion and hurried out.
