Noticing Calla’s downcast eyes and expressionless face, Mercer frowned slightly. Then, he turned away in disappointment.
After seeing Mercer off, Jasmine returned and sighed at Calla’s desolate demeanor. “Mrs. Garland, can’t you lower your pride a little? How can you keep a man like this?”
Jasmine shook her head and left thereafter.
Calla watched Jasmine’s retreating figure, wondering if lowering her pride would make him stay. If it could make Mercer love her, she would be willing to do it a thousand times, ten thousand times even. But she feared that no matter how much she lowered her pride, he would still look at her in disdain.
In the following days, Mercer didn’t appear again.
Carol visited now and then with homemade soup, always asking why she hadn’t seen her son–in–law. Calla always evaded the question, either saying Mercer was busy with work or that he was on a business trip.
Fortunately, Carol didn’t press further. She had seen Simon bringing various groceries and expensive supplements.
If Mercer didn’t care, he wouldn’t have had his assistant delivering so many things. Some of those supplements were quite expensive, too.
Calla understood that Mercer didn’t care about those small expenses. Despite his cold demeanor, he wasn’t heartless or stingy.
On Sunday, Zoey came to see Calla and shared some news. “Cal, Harlan has been asking about you lately,” Zoey said, biting into an apple.
Calla frowned at this. “Why do you call him by his first name? He’s your teacher now, isn’t he? You should call him Mr. Engler or Professor Engler.”
But Zoey was stubborn. “Calling him Mr. Engler feels too formal, and Professor Engler sounds old. I’m more comfortable calling him Harlan.”
Calla rolled her eyes at her sister’s casual attitude. Curious, she asked, “Why is Harlan asking about me?”
She had interacted with Harlan a few times recently because of Zoey’s college matters. However, they hadn’t been in contact for months prior.
“Maybe he knows you had a baby and wants to send a gift?” Zoey guessed.
Hearing this, Calla’s face darkened. “Didn’t you tell him?”
“I did.” Seeing Calla’s displeasure, Zoey became less carefree.
Calla assumed Harlan was aware of her loss and was concerned about her. She was grateful for
Harlan’s concern, but she needed to keep her distance.

Calla then said to Zoey, “If he asks again, tell him I’m doing well physically and emotionally. Also, let him know that my husband and I are getting along fine.”
“Okay, I’ll tell him that.” Zoey understood her sister’s intention to set boundaries with Harlan.
Zoey shared many stories from her days at Southera University–most of them involving Harlan. Her eyes lit up whenever she mentioned him.
Calla vaguely felt that her sister Zoey seemed to have a fondness for Harlan. But she had no energy to concern herself with such matters now.
Her mind was elsewhere, so she barely listened to what Zoey was saying. She was too preoccupied with her worries and the memory of her lost child.
