Chapter 133

Calla felt like she had slept for a very long time. Her entire body ached with exhaustion.
She struggled to move, feeling completely drained of energy. A sudden panic surged from within her when she opened her eyes.
“Mrs. Garland, you’re awake?” Jasmine’s voice reached her ears. Calla focused on Jasmine’s face, then noticed everything around her was white.
White walls, white ceiling, white sheets. No wonder her hand hurt; she was still hooked up to an IV drip.
She turned her head and saw a black silhouette standing by the window. That silhouette was all too familiar–Mercer. Seeing him, Calla’s heart inexplicably tightened.
Hearing Jasmine’s words, Mercer slowly turned around. His gaze was cold as he looked at Calla lying on the hospital bed.
Calla had no mind to notice his gaze. Her thoughts immediately went to her child. She reached for her belly, but the prominent bump was gone.
“The baby! What about the baby?” she cried out.
Jasmine glanced at Mercer, hesitant to speak.
Seeing Jasmine’s silence, Calla quickly turned to Mercer. “Where is our baby?”
Mercer took a few steps forward, his face devoid of expression. “The baby died shortly after birth.”
Calla’s mind went blank at his reply. She stared at Mercer with wide eyes, and a few seconds later, she shook her head frantically. “No, that’s not possible!”
“Mrs. Garland, please calm down!” Jasmine hurriedly tried to restrain Calla, who was struggling to get out of bed.
There was no way Calla could calm down. She couldn’t accept the reality that the child she had carried for nearly nine months was gone.
“I need to see my baby!” Calla used all her strength to rip out the IV. Blood splattered everywhere, staining the white sheets.
Though Calla’s body was weak, her grief over losing her child drove her to madness. Jasmine couldn’t
hold her down.
Mercer stepped forward and gripped Calla’s shoulders. With a frown, he said, “Your baby is gone. Nothing you do can change that.”
“No, it’s not true. It can’t be true…” Calla mumbled, slumping on the hospital bed.
“Mrs. Garland…” Jasmine pressed her fingers against Calla’s hand. Blood from where the IV needle had been had stained her hospital gown.
Seeing her in such despair, Mercer announced, “I’ll get the doctor.” He left the room thereafter.

Calla was in a daze. After a while, she broke into loud sobs. Her child was gone, gone forever!
Soon, a doctor came and gave the unruly Calla a sedative. Shortly after, she fell into a deep sleep.
The night in the hospital room was quieter than ever. Every footstep outside could be heard clearly.
Mercer sat by the bed, frowning as he looked at the sleeping Calla. His gaze was very complex–it was a mix of love, pity, sorrow, and anguish.
“Jasmine, you should go rest,” Mercer said, still looking at Calla.
“Mr. Garland, you should go instead,” Jasmine replied in concern.
“You can take over for me in the morning,” he said, then fell silent.
Knowing Mercer’s temperament, Jasmine gathered her things and left the room.
After Jasmine left, Mercer reached for Calla’s hand. Frowning, he murmured, “Why do you never seem to get me?”
