Rose stepped forward and asked, “Jasmine, what exactly is the relationship between Harlan and Calla?”
“It seems… it seems…” Jasmine lowered her head.
“Seems what? Speak up quickly,” Rose pressed.
“I–It seems like he’s Mrs. Garland’s ex–boyfriend,” Jasmine said ambiguously.
Upon hearing this, Rose furiously exclaimed, “Calla is stepping out of bounds here. How can she still be involved with an ex–boyfriend after marrying you? Mercer, I’ve told you all along that this girl from an ordinary family is only interested in our wealth. There’s no real love there.”
“Mom, can you please stop talking?” Mercer said, holding his head in frustration.
But Rose wouldn’t stop. “Once the baby is born, you should give her some money and send her on her way. The Garland family can’t afford this embarrassment. You’re a man of reputation and can’t have such a wife!”
Sophie stepped forward at this moment, pretending to persuade Rose. “Mrs. Garland, please, say no more. Mercer is a man who can make his own decisions. Have trust in him to make the right one.”
Shaking her head, Rose said, “I can’t deal with this anymore. I’m tired. I’m leaving now.” With that, she left the hospital.
After Rose left, Sophie saw that Mercer looked terrible. She approached him, saying, “Mercer, you’ve been busy all day and haven’t had a bite to eat, have you? I can get you some takeout if you’d like.”
But Mercer was indifferent to her. Coldly, he said to Sophie, “Don’t assume I don’t know what you’re up to. Even if I divorce Calla, I will never marry you.”
This remark deeply hurt Sophie. After a long pause, she said with tears in her eyes, “Mercer, I never expected you to marry me. I only want to stay by your side, to be able to see you every day.”
Sophie’s words annoyed Mercer even more, but his expression softened a bit. He lowered his head and said, “Go back and rest.”
“Let me stay here with you,” Sophie insisted, not wanting to leave.
“I told you to go back!” Mercer finally growled impatiently.
Seeing that he was truly angry, Sophie was frightened. She quickly responded, “Alright, I’ll go back. But please take care of yourself.”
“I know,” Mercer replied, not wanting to pay her any more attention. He turned his face away.
Sophie left, turning back every few steps.

Only Jasmine and Mercer remained in the cold hallway,
Mercer’s eyes were fixed on Jasmine, making her even more nervous,

These words caused Mercer’s expression to contort. His hands clenched into fists, making cracking sounds. Jasmine was so scared that she cowered in the corner with trembling shoulders..
On the delivery bed, Calla was breathing in the anesthetic gas. Her eyes were dazed as she watched the doctors and nurses bustling about,
She still had some consciousness and kept praying in her heart for her child to be born safely.
